Fast Fashion vs. Luxury Brands

Disclaimer: I am an average college student with an average college student budget and is aware of possibly sounding like a snobby, elitist fashion blogger. This post is a reflection of my own opinions and not the rest of the 6100 Main team. Whenever I give brand suggestions and pick out clothes for other people, I usually try to stay in the lower end of the market: Forever 21, Target, H&M, Aldo, and occasionally Urban Outfitters, Zara, Topshop, etc. Other affordable brands include Charlotte Russe, Papaya, A'gaci... you get the idea. All of these brands share the same concept: mass produced fashion that quickly rotates in and out, inspired by high fashion houses like Givenchy or Chanel, made possible by cheap labor in sweatshop factories and a compromise in material quality and craftsmanship. The term for this is  fast fashion;  these are all fast fashion brands.  On the other hand, there are those brands that cost a month's worth rent or maybe a kidney or two, a...

LNY 2015 Fashion Show In Depth with Thu

With a completely new team of coordinators, you may have noticed the stark contrast between this year's Fashion Show and the previous years'. The former team, Linda Cheng, Brittney Xu, Nathan Alison, and a few others, were extremely creative and had pulled off stunningly extravagant shows - avant garde, extreme post modern in the eyes of fashion-naive college students. This year, we wanted to both promote this blog as well as try to raise the standard for the general fashion sense of the student body as a whole. The easiest way to achieve this was to do an inspiring, more ready-to-wear show, aka very safe and could possibly be considered boring. The final show turned out to be a spectrum of styles, from dressy to street, traditional to fusion to modern. Which was completely fine because this was a reflection of each of the designer's tastes, the models' popularity helped with the great positive response, and everybody had a good time through the end. Couples model...

Unconventional Alumni: Deanne Nguyen, Fashion Inspiration

Hopefully through this blog, you have been able to realize that our student body can be pretty fashionable when we want to be (every day or for the job fair once a semester.) But among us, how many have a hidden dream of joining the fashion industry? Which of us CompSci, Busi, Chbe, Engl, Chem, etc. majors secretly ache to also major in Fashion? But have set aside our dreams of designing and styling for our greater dreams of leading and saving the [non-fashion] world? A lot of people imagine Rice students to graduate into engineering, law, and medicine jobs/schools. As much as the majority of us fit this stereotype, there will be some who continue 'unconventional' and enter fields not spoken about on campus.  I am honored and pleased to introduce to you all one of these unconventional people, Will Rice '11, Deanne Nguyen! She graduated with a linguistics background and currently works in Seoul, South Korea with a news agency but, most importantly, is the co-founder ...

A Shiny New Year

Preface: Yes, this is the first post of 2015 (!!!),  but before I start I would like to explain that I have been working on this post in bits and pieces since November. It is simply a matter of procrastination and inappropriate timing on my part that has caused this post to clinch this coveted annual title.      Do you remember that scene in The Devil Wears Prada when Miranda Priestly is in a roundtable discussion about ideas for Runway Magazine's Spring issue and, after one of the other editors suggests a spread on florals, Priestly dryly responds (like Death Valley dry) with "Florals? For spring?...Groundbreaking."      This has been my opinion on metallics for Fall/Winter. Don't get me wrong, I love metallics and I personally look forward to this time of the year because the trend is so lovingly recycled. I can be sure I will see celebrities lauded for their seasonally-appropriate use of metallics. I guess what I'm saying is that metalli...

Fashion Dialogue: Fashion Statement or Political Mistake?

I'm excited to introduce a new series of posts called "Fashion Dialogue"! Our bloggers will give their two cents on certain topics that we find interesting or controversial, and we'll share them here on the blog to get you all updated and thinking about happenings in the fashion world. Please feel free to comment your thoughts and opinions below, on our Facebook, or by email at 6100mainfashion@gmail.com ! Fast fashion brands such as Forever21, Urban Outfitters, and Zara have seen a great increase in popularity the past few years. Their clothing and accessories closely follow runway trends, essentially making it affordable for the middle and lower class to look like they just stepped out of Barney's or Vogue. These companies market to such a wide range of fashion styles, economic classes, and age groups (ages 5 years and up, basically) that they are able to put almost any sort of item on the market and expect to make sales. Naturally, there is bound to be at le...

NAILED IT!

Ok, so on a college student budget purchasing Louboutin heels may not be a priority right now, however you can have the next best thing with Christian Louboutin's first nail polish line!  These electric hues will still turn heads, especially with a sensational bottle to match. The sharp shape is inspired by Mr. Louboutin's Ballerina Ultima  8-inch (yes-EIGHT INCH) heels! At about $50 a pop, it's a much friendlier price than the shoes ;) Add this to your wish list!  Queen Bey even dares to wear the Ballerina Ultima's in her Green Light video:                                                      Where to buy: Sephora, Christian Louboutin e-store , Nordstorm, Neiman Marcus  by Mary Anderson
